NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION

Neuropsychological evaluation is requested for many reasons including assisting physicians or other healthcare professionals in determining if  a person has a brain related condition such as ADHD, dementia, or another disorder. It can also help identify a person's cognitive strengths and limitations, which can aid in treatment planning and is especially important after stroke, traumatic brain injury, or anoxia.  Identifying strengths assists people in developing compensatory strategies and ways to work around some of their limitations. Also, it can be appropriate to identify a “baseline” level of cognitive functioning which can then be compared to future evaluations to assess for possible stabilization, improvement, or decline.

A neuropsychological evaluation usually consists of an interview with the patient and a family member and a group of tests designed to assess thinking abilities such as intelligence, memory, attention/concentration, language, motor skills, spatial abilities, judgment/reasoning, emotional functioning, and personality.  Afterward, feedback sessions provide a deep understanding of the patient's ability to function, as well as the patient's strengths and impairments.  A plan is created to improve functioning and harmony in the family.

The length of the evaluation depends on the reason for referral and can be discussed with Dr. McGee prior to appointments. Sometimes the evaluation is broken down into a couple of sessions depending on your family's needs.
